Do Humanists, atheists and agnostics suffer discrimination or rejection when they come out of the closet ? If so, how severe is that discrimination ? Send your Humanist Coming Out Story to joebeck@humtc.com and I will summarize your responses, anonymously if you prefer, on this blog and in our newsletter.
I've spoken with attorneys, physicians, nurses, and business owners who are reluctant to let others know that they strive to be ethical without recourse to Gods or religion because they fear significant negative repercussions. I'm going to go out on a limb and let you know that my experience is that this fear is overstated. I personally lost one business client when I came out of the closet by starting the Humanist Perspective cable access tv show in Buffalo NY 15 years ago, but I expected that since the owners were Catholic and staunch Republicans. What I am hearing from those who feared extensive family hostility or stress over their decision to come out of the closet as a Humanist is that after a short while everything went back to normal. My guess is that what we have to fear is "fear itself" and that most people's coming out of the closet stories will be rather tame. Am I wrong ? Educate me, email your story to joebeck@humtc.com.
